Reading Kingdom: A TOS Crew Review

Reading Kingdom

Learning to read takes plenty of time and practice - Reading Kingdom is designed to help your children ages 4-10 to read and write with comprehension up to a third grade level.

This online subscription program incorporates a variety of activities to teach six important areas in reading:
  • Phonics
  • Sequencing
  • Writing
  • Meaning
  • Grammar
  • Comprehension
English is complicated!  For example - "phonics has created almost 600 complicated rules. Put simply, if phonics worked as advertised, the word would be spelled "foniks."  Reading Kingdom takes a different approach and teaches an integrated system that uses both phonics and whole language approaches to get your child reading and understanding.

This easy-to-use program starts with an assessment for your child.  Once completed, the program places them in the correct level.  The program remembers their progress, so they can simply login and start reading.

My testers are a third grader and a struggling reader in fourth grade.  They have both used this program previously.  The program works well for multiple students at different levels. My testers were motivated to see each other's progress on the Dashboard,  friendly competition :-)

The lessons are bright and varied. Activities include reading words, fill-in-the-blank, typing missing letters or words, and matching letters and pictures.  The variety keeps them engaged!

As they use the program, they are corrected when giving wrong answers with the program telling them the correct answer.  When they answer correctly, reinforcement is given.  They get automatic feedback.

Reading Kingdom recommends using the program at least 4-5 times per week for optimal learning.  The lessons take my testers around 20-30 minutes each.  A bonus, as they use this program - their keyboarding skills get practice too!  Students work through the program at their own pace, customized to their abilities.  The entire set of components can take anywhere from 12-15 months.

I love that they can use this program independently, with no help from me.  It is a wonderful addition to our regular reading curriculum, and a perfect way to keep our skills progressing with summer break coming.

The program offers plenty of information on their progress,  even weekly emails sent to my inbox.  It's very easy to tell how they are doing, or change levels if needed.

They offer 30 Day Free Trial so you can see for yourself how this program works. Check out the free trial here.

Other members of the Crew reviewed ASD Reading, another program for children 4-15 on the autism spectrum. It also teaches them to read and write with comprehension at a 3rd grade level (Lexile 750) and incorporates a number of modifications and additional formats that make it particularly effective for students on the spectrum.  Check them out!
